Teotihuacan's Pyramid of the Sun contains 2.5 million tonnes of adobe brick and volcanic stone, yet from a basket 300 metres overhead, the entire grid of the ancient city compresses into a single field of vision. The site flourished between 100 CE and 550 CE as Mesoamerica's largest urban center, housing an estimated 125,000 inhabitants across 20 square kilometres. Its alignment to celestial events and the Avenue of the Dead's 2.5-kilometre spine made it a pilgrimage destination long after its mysterious collapse. Today the archaeological zone draws two million visitors annually, but only a fraction witness it from the air. Balloon operators launch at dawn from adjacent agricultural land, catching thermal currents that lift baskets silently above the Pyramid of the Moon, then south along the ceremonial axis. Flight paths trace the original urban grid — residential compounds, the Ciudadela complex, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent — features difficult to comprehend from ground level. The 210 MXN conservation fee grants same-day entry to climb both major pyramids and explore the on-site museums housing polychrome murals and obsidian artifacts. The site's scale becomes legible only with altitude. The Pyramid of the Sun rises 65 metres in five diminishing tiers, its western facade still aligned to the sunset on August 12, the date the Mexica calendar began. The smaller Pyramid of the Moon anchors the northern terminus, framed by Cerro Gordo mountain. Between them, 15 smaller temple platforms mark cross-streets where mica, jade, and cacao once changed hands. Ground-level exploration reveals talud-tablero architectural profiles and drainage systems engineered for the Valley of Mexico's seasonal rains. But the city's geometric precision — its right-angle street grid, symmetrical plaza layouts, and inter-pyramid sightlines — reveals itself fully only from above, where morning light casts shadows that trace buried structures still unexcavated beneath farm fields.
